Reclamation is an intimate exploration of identity, community, and the healing power of music.
At its core is Jacen Duncan, a queer Black choir director who was expelled from his church due to his identity, but who now directs an inclusive gospel choir (Inkloosiv Voices) that welcomes members from all walks of life. As the choir prepares for their Christmas concert, the film introduces the lives and stories of some of its members, showing how gospel music serves as a bridge between faith and identity, exclusion and belonging, tradition and modernity. This concert marks a moment of celebration and visibility, but in the wake of Donald Trump’s re-election and the resurgence of anti-2SLGBTQIA+ rhetoric, the stakes shift. The film’s second act follows the choir as their message of love, inclusion, and community transforms into an act of joyful resistance against a rising wave of hate, fear, and erasure. Through their journey, Reclamation highlights the resilience of marginalized individuals reclaiming music, faith, and space in a reimagined, inclusive form.
